On my home page I keep the four reasons that matter most if you are coming to Costa Rica. Those are not the only ones. Here are eight more that my students run into along the way — some practical, some not, all of them real.
🗣️ You can speak with more than 500 million people
Spanish is the second most spoken native language on the planet, ahead of English. Learning it does not open one country to you — it opens around twenty, from Mexico to Argentina, plus Spain and a very large part of the United States.
That is the difference between a language you use on one holiday and a language you use for the rest of your life.
💼 It is worth real money in your career
In the United States alone, more than 40 million people speak Spanish at home. Health care, education, tourism, logistics and customer service all treat it as a concrete advantage, not a nice-to-have.
It is also one of the few skills you can put on a CV and actually demonstrate in the first five minutes of an interview.
🧠 It keeps your mind working
Learning a second language as an adult trains memory, attention and mental flexibility. You do not have to become bilingual to feel it — the effort of switching between two languages is the exercise itself.
Most of my adult students notice it first in small things: they remember names better, they lose the thread less often.
🎶 Music, films and books stop needing subtitles
Subtitles always lose something — a joke, a double meaning, the exact word someone chose. Understanding a song without translation, or reading García Márquez the way he wrote it, is a small pleasure that never wears off.
And it is the least demanding practice there is: you are already listening to music anyway.
🤝 You make real friends, not just contacts
There is a difference between being served in a restaurant and being invited into the kitchen. Speaking someone's language changes how they treat you, and it is the difference between visiting a place and being let into it.
This is the reason my students remember longest, and the one that almost nobody puts on their list before starting.
✅ It is genuinely one of the easier languages for English speakers
Spanish and English share thousands of words with Latin roots, and Spanish is written the way it sounds: learn the five vowels and you can read any word aloud correctly, even one you have never seen.
The US Foreign Service Institute places Spanish in its easiest category for English speakers — roughly 600 to 750 class hours to professional working proficiency. That is a real number, and it is far smaller than most people assume.
❤️ You understand a culture, not just a vocabulary
Behind the language is everything the language carries: the food, the music, the history of two continents. Words like sobremesa or pura vida have no clean translation because they describe a way of living, not a thing.
You cannot really learn those from a list. You learn them from someone who grew up inside them.
🌱 You grow, not just your vocabulary
Learning a language as an adult means being bad at something in public and doing it anyway. That is uncomfortable, and it is exactly where the growth is.
Almost every student ends up telling me the same thing: what changed was not only their Spanish. It was their willingness to try.
